exploitainment

More on some of what I said in my previous post here:

He also said that, in the future, even the tactical breaks will have a title sponsor of their own. "Just like 'Citi Moment of Success', and 'DLF Maximum Sixes', we plan to introduce sponsored events such as 'TVS Tactical Break', 'Reebok Run-Chase', and 'Dominos Dot-Ball'", said Mr Modi to a stunned audience. When a reporter asked if this didn't amount to rampant commercial exploitation, Mr Modi shot back "You mean 'Coca-cola commercial exploitation'. If you fail to mention the sponsor's name, I will hit you with a 'Lays Lawsuit'".

I like.

Inevitable initial IPL ramble-1

Some disparate ramblings on the IPL. These could or could not continue through the tournament :

I loved Day 1. All the brash, confident, super talented young cricketers were shown a lesson or two by the oldies. The lessons were in many things, ranging from simplicity, technique and focus to style, class and sheer genius. Here’s to more of all of that!

Shane Warne. Thank you. It was so worth staying up. Virat Kohli, you cocky little twat.

I just wish they could show me more of Lalit Modi. After all, the brilliant businessman has transformed cricket and given me so much to look (forward) to. I should get to see more of him before the match, at the toss, in between overs, everywhere. Please?

Its been 2 days and I already am sick of the DLF Maximums and the Citi Moments of Success(es?). Some of the commentators are falling over themselves to make sure they say it immediately after a six or wicket, often needing to overlap their colleague's reactions in order to do so. I have already heard “that’s a Citi moment of success if ever there was one” at least three times. I have also heard Ravi Shastri (oh where would we be without him) inadvertently call a DLF Maximum (a six) a Citi Moment of Success instead. There is no success in six, Ravi.

They’re picking a shortlist of 50 young things to be Miss Bollywood South Africa or something (the winner will have a "shot at Bollywood"). But hey, there's no reality show around this?! No heart breaking back stories, touching dreams, tearful exits and loving parents? Bah, you guys, you missed a trick there! I thought you knew all there is to know about milking cricket.

Sitting here I wish I could see Mandira Bedi & Co. Am missing out, I am.

Heterocera

Three days.
At the very least, it sat there for three days. In the same spot in the loo at work, on the ledge just above the (what do you call it- urinal).Going to the loo being the engrossingly exciting task that it is, I couldn’t help but notice this thing. Then, it was the next day. It was still there, so I started to think it was dead. I blew at it. I’m sick, I know, but I blew at it gently. It’s wings flapped a little in the breeze, but little else. Then it was the third day. When the a/c kicks in, it really kicks in. I pee a lot then. Er, sorta. And the moth remained in its position, unbelievably, for the third day. The loos are cleaned twice a day but obviously not one had bothered to pay some respect to this (dead?) moth.

What was it doing there, for three days, probably more? That’s 72 hours, god knows how long that is in moth-time. Years, perhaps. What would it contemplate. Life? Women? Cricket? 42? Was it people-watching? In a human loo? Was it noticing the groaners who recover from big nights through all of the next day, or the whistlers who distractedly looked at different tiles on the wall? Maybe it was waiting for some celebrities, who it could touch and have a story for the grandkids, or maybe it just wanted to know if the Legend of The Angelic Chinese Boy Who Peeps As He Pees was true.
Either way, I blew a little harder (er, at the insect), and it flew away. Yes, it flew away. After three frantic days of immobility, it finally had gathered enough energy to move its little feathery behind out of that charming place.

Was it just me, or is this really curious. Or maybe he was an employee in the building, and (also) just plain bored.

Darth stuff

been meaning to blog this, but haven't been able to, somehow.
Added this a few days ago to my roll, and whoever's out there, it is definitely worth your while to check out this blog.
The Memoirs of Darth Vader
If you are a Star Wars fan at any level, this is great fun, and well written fun. If you are not, it still makes for a worthwile read.

"Chin up, Lord Vader," my master continued. "The Empire will strike back, and that pitiful pocket of anarchists will be stamped out forever."
"But master, in my son they may have a new hope for the return of the Jedi."
"Enough of this," grunted Darth Sidious, waving his gnarled hand dismissively.
"We will speak of Skywalker when you come before me on Coruscant. Make haste for the core, my servant."
"Yes, my master."
The transmission ended, and I have remained ensconced in my guest chambers aboard Avenger ever since, staring out the port-holes with my hands clasped behind my back, meditating on the shining stars and pin-prick worlds and the unholy voids that separate them.

Just a bit from the latest post. There's some stuff that's far better...and there's lots to read.
Ah, good stuff...good stuff.

work

"So, do you have a lot of work to do today?"
"Depends..."
"Depends?"
"It depends on whether I do it"
